Young Lords Organization (YLO) Bronx Branch
“Having finally established our base in El Barrio, we opened a new branch in the Bronx. The new office, situated at 949 Longwood Avenue (corner of Kelly St.) was opened early this April and will continue the programs started in El Barrio. More than this, it will begin programs relevant to the people in the Bronx area, it will also serve as a Latin Community News Service called “Palante” in which international revolutionary news will be included, and distributed to the people of the community. This last function of the YLO came about after we found that many of the liberation struggles undertaken by peoples in other countries are not known to people in this country due to press “censorship” of revolutionary news.” —Lulu Carreras, Lieutenant of Finance. Palante (1970)

Scene at Yale: Despierta Boricua 40th Anniversary Gala
This past weekend, Despierta Boricua - Yale’s Puerto Rican Student Organization - commemorated DB’s 40th Anniversary with a Gala that celebrated the impact DB has had on the Yale campus, as well as the growth of the Latino community at Yale.
Pictured above is a majority of the attendees of the dinner, including the keynote speaker, Federal District Court Judge Edgardo Ramos ‘82.

Been planning this since the beginning of the semester, and so excited it’s finally tomorrow! I can’t wait to see all the students and alumni from so many different generations come together to celebrate the impact DB has had on this university. ¡Despierta Boricua!

I really need to stop reading this book on Puerto Rican history in public, because I can’t help but be disgusted and angry at what the U.S. did, and it makes me want to curse white people (basically everyone that surrounds me on the LIRR) out . I know I know that makes me a bad person, but hey I’m admitting my flaws, and I have yet to cause a scene on the train so that makes me somewhat of a good person, right? Right?

Latino New York.

A new class offered at Yale this coming semester.

“The historical presence of Latinas and Latinos in New York City from the late nineteenth century to the present. Differences and similarities among Puerto Rican, Mexican, Cuban, and Dominican communities in the context of New York City history. Complex cultural dynamics as illustrated in novels, poetry, music, and film.”

fuck yes!

To be Puerto Rican is to love your family. My family is my life.

- A Puerto Rican mayor’s response when asked to define being Puerto Rican.
Excerpt from The Islands

“We got to stick together”

There are two Puerto Rican paralegals at the law firm I intern at. I’ve been talking to the man, but I just started to talk to the woman, Yvette, today. Through the conversation she found out I was an unpaid intern and she got so upset. Like actually really upset, it surprised me lol. After she walked away still talking about how pissed that made her, she comes back to me ten minutes later asking me to send her my resume. She got in contact with her old company that finds part time temp work for paralegals, and told them about me. I was so shocked she went out of her way to do this for me. I told her she didn’t need to do that, and I was so thankful. Her reply: “we got to help each other out, and you deserve it. Don’t mention it.”

Shut the fuck up.

I know I don’t speak Spanish fluently. I’m learning. I know I don’t know a lot about Puerto Rican history. I’m reading about it. Just because you took one damn intro to Latin American Studies class doesn’t make your opinion better than mine or you a fucking genius in the freaking field. So don’t fucking try to bash Puerto Rico in front of me. “Puerto Rico could’ve done so much with how much the United States has given them.” Seriously? Shut the fuck up, and don’t stop me when I’m trying to inform you on how ridiculous that statement was. “If my country was in Puerto Rico’s situation, we would’ve taken advantage of it.” You’re a fellow Latino; why do you always feel the need to bash other Latin American countries? It’s kinda pathetic. You think you sound all educated because you’re spitting the exact words from your professor’s mouth, but no. You’re ignorant.

First Day Interning:

Aside from the long commute, which isn’t so terrible when you’re people watching, the first day interning was amazing! I got my own desk with a view of the Statue of Liberty right from my seat, and I’ll admit, I felt pretty legit hahahaaa.  When I got there, I met practically everyone in the firm, and for the most part they were all welcoming and seemed pretty nice. I did notice, not to my surprise though, there weren’t many people of color working at the firm, but I found out there are two other Puerto Ricans working as paralegals there, and the one I met promised to bring me some flan soon! That probably was the highlight of the day after getting my own desk hahahaa. The first day is down, and from the looks of it, I’m excited to keep coming back.
