Sorry that I keep prodding, but what competitions / organizations would you recommend send environmental research to?
It’s no problem. For any research in general, Siemens, Intel STS, and ISEF are the big names for high school research competitions. The two environmental research competitions I did were SJWP and I-SWEEEP. And if I remember correctly the I-SWEEEP deadline hasn’t passed yet for this year so you can still apply if you have a paper written.
She was so enthusiastic and excited to have been accepted, i couldn’t have been more pumped to talk to someone. When I congratulated her, she repeatedly congratulated me on being here already and thanked me for making her day with the call. At the end, she tells me “if all the people at Yale are this enthusiastic and helpful, I’m gonna love it there.”
“A white college student from a private college goes into a poor neighborhood and volunteers four hours a week and that’s considered exemplary. [Whereas] a poor kid who lives in that community and takes care of all the kids in that neighborhood four hours every day is not seen as a volunteer.”—Dr. Patricia Hill Collins quoting Public Allies CEO Paul Schmitz in her talk Answering the Call to Community Service. are an awesome Latin@ couple who are masters of Stiles, one of Yale’s residential colleges. Today they told me that they delivered 500 tacos to the mayor of East Haven in retaliation to his saying that he’d help the Latino community by eating tacos for dinner. I love witty Latin@ academics. I seriously want to be these two when I grow up!
That's cool! I'm in high school and I've just started environmental research on the impact of invasive plants on ecosystems. Did you submit your work to any competitions / did you send it to Yale as a supplement?
That sounds really interesting! I definitely hope everything goes as well as it possibly can (‘cause really, no research project runs smoothly hahaa). Yea I submitted my research to a few competitions, and sent my paper as a supplement to Yale. I worked my ass off for the project. I sent it to whoever would take it!
Because the freshmen class gets together at midnight to have a massive snowball fight on Old Campus that is the most hectic, insane, and one of the most hilarious and painful moments of my life. Moments like this, ones that are non-academic at all and just completely fun, is the reason why I love being here every day.
Seeing one of my sisters and my dad today makes me realize how much I really love home. I don’t always think about it or feel homesick all the time, but when they surprised me with a visit today, it made me wanna go back. I love college and mostly everything that comes with it, but being with them made me forget about it all and brought me back to how much I miss just being with my family. Having them here and seeing them leave to go back kind of made me really understand that I’m doing my own thing while they keep on doing there own together. I don’t know, I’m weird, but it sucks. I can’t explain it.
